Escuela Técnico Vocacional MIR

In the Dominican Republic the average rural family has five or more children and only 25% of adolescents have ever attended a single day of classes in a secondary educational setting. The poorest children, especially girls, are unable to complete school because of family and economic responsibilities.

The Technical-Vocational School provides transportation to and from the school as well as a high school education, counseling and vocational training to meet the significant educational needs of the Dominican population.

The Vocational / Technical School of La Romana, founded in 1998 in collaboration with the Sisters of Maria Auxiliadora, an auxiliary of the Catholic Church, provides education for girls from 5th through 12th grades. During their final two years, they receive vocational training in computer operation, bookkeeping, tourism, nursing, hair styling, and-through a program certified by Johnson and Wales University-culinary arts. Currently, 580 girls are enrolled in the school, which has a graduation rate of 95%. This school plays a crucial role in a country where the likelihood of attending school pastfifth grade is less than 40%. Over 750 girls have graduated.
